Hi All
A friend has asked me to take a look at a problem he is having with his XP
Pro PC.
A folder on his PC will allow him to go into the folder but will not allow
him to open the files in the folder.
What has happened in the lead up to this problem is as follows:-
He has made the folder private a few weeks ago.
In the meantime he has had a minor problem with a driver conflict.
He has asked the kid next door to take a look at it and the kid has run the
XP setup again and the PC now ask you which OS you wish to start when it
boots up, just as in a dual boot system.
When you boot into the second installation of XP you can't access the files
in the folder as mentioned, you also can't access any of the applications
that were installed in the original installation.
If you try to boot into the original installation it just goes trhough the
montions of setup again but then hangs whilst doing that.
The user account when the PC boots has full administrator access.
What I need to achieve is getting these files off the PC so that I can
format and rebuild the PC, but it won't even let me access the drive over
the network interface using the correct login credentials or even let me
copy the folder to another area of the PC.
I have seen something similar to this problem ages ago on an NT4 system and
I read somewhere there was a way to remove the security (SID) from the files
but as usual I can't find anything about it again.
It is important to get these files as they contain account information
belonging to the owner and yep you guessed it he dosen't have a backup.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Best Regards
Bren
