Running windows 2000 Server with ntfs formatted disk as
the administrator.

Recently, all files starting with default.* on all drives
became invisible to most dos cmds (copy, dir, delete, ...)
and the Windows explorer.

I can create a file such as default.aspx or default.doc,
but it cannot be seen by the above tools. I cannot erase
it in the explorer or cmd window. I cannot then create
another file with that name in the same directory. I also
cannot see the file using dir /x.

I've looked at the directory structure using a repair
tool and I do see these files. They have a length and a
status of not deleted.

Any ideas on what is wrong or what tools are available to
dianoze the problem?

you may try add a $ or space to your search or command
line. windows will use these characters to hide files.
another thing to try would be at the dos prompt changing
the attributes of the file. been a while since I've had
to do anything like that, but a good reference would be
using some of the older DOS commands from like 5.0.
worth a shot
