cannot access dos

i am using windows xp, i am trying to access dos by
typing in cmd or command in the "run" program from the
start menu. the dos window pops up and then immediately
shuts down. why????, how do i fix this???

you are infected by one of the viruses that blocks command functions to
prevent removal.

thanks for your quick reply. do you have a good updated
antivirus program that you recommend? i downloaded and
installed nortons antivirus, but when i try to run the
program, nothing happens, the hour glass appears for 1-2
seconds and then dissapears. any recommendations.

Both are free.

For an online scan Trend Micro's Housecall is a good scanner
