Cannot access contacts through address book (when writing new mail) URGENT :-(

Hi there,

Outlook XP Windows Me :-(

When writing an email, i cannot click the "To" button and lookup my contacts
in my Contact folder.
Instead it states the following:

The address list cannot be displayed. The Contacts folder associated with
this address list could not be opened; its may have been moved or deleted,
or you do not have permissions. For more information on how to remove this
folder from this folder from the Outlook Address Book , see Microsoft
Outlook help.
***

All my emails are they're, as are my contacts in the contact folder, just
not available in the address book.
How can i add this Contacts folder to the address book and remove the rogue
one? Outlook help revealed nothing!

This i think is relevant to the problem. I have swapped .PST Files over, so
the Outlook.pst file is a larger one taken from another PC, so that the user
has access to his old emails. It has all been setup in Data File Management.
Outlook accepted this, re-built my shortcuts and appeared fine, apart from
this.

Remove the old Contacts folder and add the new one to your Address Book;
Tools-> Address Book and in Address Book; Tools-> Options...

This is exactly the same problem I've been having since I
got a new computer (windows XP Pro) and started using
outlook 2003.

My address book was not reading my contact list. So i tried
what you said -- going into tools, address book and then
tools--> options and now YES, my address book is able to
read my contact list.

But I still can't use nicknames anymore. Meaning, I can't
just type the nickname and have the email of that person
automatically appear in my To: or CC: line. I still have to
go select their name from the contact list, and that takes
time. How to get the nicknames feature back?

Autocomplete uses a cache that is populated as you send messages, not your
Contacts. If this is a new install, you haven't populated a cache yet.

So there is no way to use the nicknames I had set up in
Outlook 2000? Meaning, I have to type the first few letters
of each person's email address so that Autocomplete can
complete them for me, but my short one-word names or
phrases signifying each person are not going to work anymore?

Just clarifying. I am sure Autocomplete is helpful, but I'm
not used to that! When I type "teacher" i want it to go to
my sister's work email address, instead of having to type
her name and scroll through the choices Autocomplete gives
me as possible completions!

Outlook has never used the nickname field for name recognition (except in
the long abandoned IMO mode of Outlook 98/2000--which wasn't actually using
the Outlook Address Book).

All versions of Outlook have had the ability to perform Autoresolution
(Automatic Name checking): looking for possible matches in your Contacts
data. If you enter part of a name or a nickname then tab out of the field
(or hit Alt-K [Check Names]), Outlook will attempt to resolve the name
against your address book. Any resolution you use will be saved for future
use. If it can't resolve the name, it'll red underline it and you can right
click on the name to manually resolve it. Outlook will save that resolution
for future use as well.

Outlook 2002 and above have added an autocompletion feature in addition to
this autoresolution feature. It uses a cache from messages you have sent.
