When I open Control Panel, I double click on Automatic Updates. NOTHING
happens.

A related problem: When I go to the Windows Update website, the web page
never opens... I get a white screen, and it just 'spins'.

A related problem: I get the 'shield' saying updates are downloading from
the auto-process. But when I double click the shield, NOTHING happens. The
updates never finish downloading.

I have XP Service Pack 2.

HELP!!

2 things to check:
even though it might be painful, you need to browse there with IE.
is your copy of windows genuine?

Gail,

Click Start, Run and type:

regsvr32 wups.dll

Similarly, run these commands:

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
