Cannot access address list

We recently purchased new Dell computers with MS XP Pro
and Office Pro installed. We were moving from Win 98 and
Outlook 2000 clients. I have two users who use Outlook
to access their dial up email, which was working fine
prior to the move. To move email, I logged in as
Administrator on the workstation, and moved the old
outlook.pst file from the old machine to the default
directory (user name is LoisH, directory
was "C:\Documents and Settings\LoisH\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook"). Logged
back in as the user, then opened outlook and we saw her
old emails, and contacts in the contact folder.

When she went back in to create a "New" message, she
clicks on the "To" button, and now gets the following
error messsage: "The address list could not be
displayed. The Contacts folder associated with the
address list could not be opened. It may have been moved
or deleted, or you do not have permissions. For
information on how to remove this folder from Outlook
Access Book, see Microsoft help."

I looked to see if I needed to export the contact folder
then bring it back in , but didn't see anything like this
in the MS help. Also, logged in as Administrator and
granted permissions to the user to the "Local Settings"
subdirectory and all ones underneath it, still the same
error message.

Perhaps I did not copy all appropriate folders when I
moved the machine. Any ideas on what I can do to correct
this problem (short of having this user type in all of
her old names)?

Thanks!

Dan

You never overwrite a PST file.
Your profile is corrupt.
Create a new one.

The file was not overwritten. I renamed the original
file, then copied the old file into its place. Should I
still create a new profile?

Absolutely. Just plopping a different PST file in the directory does not
connect it to the profile. The profile remains corrupt. I hope your
installations are Corp/Workgroup so you can do so.

OK, thanks for your help Russ. I assume that when I
create the profile, I can use this .PST file without
doing anything to it, correct? When it asks for the
location of the file, I just point to this as I am
creating the profile. I will also look at the MS Help
file again to make sure it gets done right.

Right.
When you configure the new profile, just point it to that PST file. That's
what connects it correctly to the profile.
Or if you end up pointing it to the wrong PST file, you can change it easily
from the Mail applet as long as Outlook is closed:
- Control Panel > Mail applet
- Remove the current Personal Folder service
- Readd the service, directing it to the new PST file location
- Restart Outlook
