Hi Folks,

I was wondering if someone could comment on the i550 for me. Staples has it
on sale this week and I like some of the features of it.I particularly like
the separate cartridges, however, I was wondering on the following:

a) how many pages roughly does a black cartridge produce before it runs
empty?
b) how does straight text look when printing documents, homework, etc? I've
read a couple reviews that mention that the ink does bleed slightly. Is it
really bad or does it look crisp enough that the common eye would not
notice?
c) How often do the printer heads need cleaning?

thanks,

Eric

If you print nothing but text, you can expect about 400+ pages. But
since graphics and photos use the black ink as well, you won't get that
many.

The reviews that mention fuzzy text are misleading because they used
plain uncoated copy paper for their tests.

But if you use ANY kind of coated paper, even inexpensive multi-purpose
paper, it prints laser-like text. For general use, I have some very
cheap paper that works great. For some documents that I want to have
more impact, I use 99+ brightness inkjet paper that helps to bring out
contrast and colours.
c) How often do the printer heads need cleaning?

I have the Canon i850, which was the next model up in the line at the
time I bought it, and I've never had to clean the heads since I bought
it over six months ago.

A friend has the i550 and they too have never had a clogged head.

I've had the i550 since November 2002.

a) I get approximately 120 full pages of text before
needing to replace the black cartridge. Of course I have
used a new cartridge since January 2003 when I put a CRS
on the printer.

b)I mostly use 24# and 28# papers and get sharp crisp text. 20#
paper depends on the brand some are better than others.

c) printheads clean themselves automatically at power-up or
after so many hours of non-use (they will clean at the next demand for
print).

How much is Staples charging for the i550? The i560 is only $129.00 and is
faster
with better photo quality printing plus Pictbridge connector for direct
from camera printing.
