What is the difference between Cannon ink CLI-8 Black and
PGI-5 Black. Both used in 4200 printer.

Not sure but these printers use 2 blacks in different size carts.
Pigmented black is for text and is in the larger cart. Dye black is in
the smaller cart and is used for photos. Make sure you take care of
your printer by using only Canon ink regardless of the temptation.

The PGI-5 is pigment based and the CLI-8 is dye based. The CLI-8 is
used for color printing and the PGI-5 for black and white printing on
plain paper.

Or what, I'll turn into a pillar of salt?

I regularly throw Measekite's Old Wive's Tale of "use only Canon ink
regardless of the temptation" out the window. I've been using
aftermarket ink for about 10 years now and saved thousands of dollars in
the process. I have three printers (iP4000, iP5000 and i860) all running
on refill and prefilled cartridges right now. Yes, when you refill you
have surplus money and can afford to buy several printers. I'd buy more
but have no room :-). Recently I brought out of long term storage my
i860 for a big reprint job of a Christmas project - 64 pages printed in
High Quality on coated paper with about 100 color photos. Even after a
full year in storage, just two primes of ink (two for the pigment black,
one for colors) was all it took to get a perfect nozzle check. The print
head had been cleaned of all ink a year ago. The print job printed
absolutely perfectly and the printer (i860) performed flawlessly. Mother
always warned me not to listen to false prophets ;-). . .

So now he can afford Canon ink

the process. I have three printers (iP4000, iP5000 and i860) all running
