Dear Microsoft group,

I have problem connecting to a broadband (ADSL) gateway
(speedtouch 530). The gateway is connected via a realtek
RTL PCI network card. The card does not detect the
router's IP address automatically and so won't connect to
it. If I enter the address manually, I can then ping the
gateway but I can't get any further in the set up. I tried
connecting via IE but this also was impossible as IE could
not open st up page. Changing the gateway made no
difference at all.

It is not firewalled and I turned off the requirement for
authentication which made no difference.

I did wonder if some of the optional networking components
were required so I loaded them from the windows XP disc
but this seemed to cause conflicts and everything slowed
to a crawl. I also wondered if some other component were
required. Unfortunately I do not seem to be able to copy
the list of processes running or service status from admin
tools for you. I think it is possible that something that
should detect and connect to the modem is turned off. Is
there a service that I need that is not normally turned on
or can be optionally turned off that may have been affectd
by previous set up?

The machine runs on an MSI 6380E motherboard using an AMD
Athlon XP 2000+.

All halp gratefully received

The very first thing you could try is to boot into safe mode with networking.
To achieve this, restart the computer and start tapping the F8 key until the advanced options menu appears. Choose "Safe mode with networking". Once booted to the desktop see if you are getting a proper ip address. If you do, most likely you are being blocked by a firewall program or an internet securities program.

Try the reset button on the router if there is one.

I had the same thing with my modem and by resetting it
all was fine.

If you still have no luck, make sure you are set to
obtain IP address automatically in the network card and
click ok. Then double click the network in the taskbar.
Go to support and repair.

See if that helps.

If you enter IP manually, try to enter gateway also ( try 192.168.0.1). Also
enter your DNS adresses (you get them at your ISP provider). It doesn't work
without that.
