"Cancelled previous action" message

I got an error last time I tried to open my database,
telling me something like an error occured when it was
last closed and it could not be opened and did I want
Access to repair it. This seemed to be the only way to get
in so I said yes. Now a couple of the forms can't be
opened in design or form view and when I use the
switchboard form to try I get the message 'Cancelled
previous action' several times. This message also keeps
popping up when I try to look at the code for the form and
when I try various other actions. I also tried to import a
copy of the non-working forms from a backup but they won't
work either.

I have no idea what caused this - neither I nor the other
person using it got any error messages when we had
previously closed the database.
Any ideas anyone?

Create a new (blank) database.

Import all the objects that you know are working properly:
File | Get External | Import.

Import the bad objects from a backup into this new database.

With a bit of luck, you will have all your data and objects working again.
