Someone wants me to set up a system on his site where his
clients can access the site and check on the status of
their case. The idea is that he would have to be able to
access the files to update information, then clients
should be able to log into their account and view updates
made. Does front page offer a feature that could be
customized for this?

Yes, you could use the database component, but requires that the site is
hosted on a Windows IIS server with the ability to use ASP and Access or SQL
Server.

Or use a Windows SharePoint Services Site

If the hosting server has WSS, creating a STS site and setting user roles is pretty straight forward
