Is there a way to use the upgrade ability of Vista to upgrade xp pro to Vista
Business without having to do a fresh install?

Yes, but make sure you follow all the advice from the upgrade advisor and
uninstall any kernel level programs (firewalls, anti-virus etc.)

I did what the advisor said and uninstalled firewall and deactivated SAV. The upgrade goes on until around the 68% complete or so and says there was a problem with the install and windows will now restore your previous OS. I am pretty sure the issue is with the raid driver, since Vista never asks for me to install it. Am I supposed to preload the driver onto XP before upgrade?

You won't be able to install them in XP, but you should install it into
Vista at the load drivers button. You should also uninstall the AV not just
disable. Reinstall the Vista compatible version after the install

Hi Mike,

Because of the way in which drivers work and the fact that they are tightly
integrated into your installation, there is a possibility if the storage
drivers are not fully compatible with Vista (even if they work flawlessly
with XP) then there is a danger of your system not being able to access the
hard drive if the correct drivers are not installed. Download and save to
removeable media ALL Vista compatible drivers for your system BEFORE carrying
out the following procedure. Use 'Google' to locate them if needed.
The safest way of doing this would be to back up all data to a removeable
drive and then follow the procedure given in my post 'Clean Install Windows
Vista Using Upgrade Media', also in this newsgroup (dated 9/21/2007). You
will have to reinstall all applications and restore the data from your
backups, but this is really the best way to go about it. Your security
software that you had running in XP will most likely not be compatible with
Vista and, even if you just uninstalled it, there might be enough residue of
it on your system to prevent compatible software being installed if you do
elect not to clean install Vista, thus leaving your system open to malware
infection. In addition to this, you should find that your system will much
more responsive.
