can you recover excel documents if only saved to disk?

I am desperately trying to find out if there is any way
you can recover excel spreadsheets, graphs,etc. if they
were only saved to (a:). My dad totally wiped off my
disk, and all my hard work is gone. IF anybody knows of a
way to retrieve documents if they are not on your hard
drive, let me know. I can see them under "my recent
documents" under start menu, (i have xp pro), but cannot
access them. someone please help. thanks.

Let me start with some advice:

Never, never, ever work from a floppy with any office application, they
are notoriously unreliable with working from floppy.

Now the real advice.

Floppies are hardly ever really erased, even by formatting them. A good
disc recovery tool will help you get your files back. Search the
internet for (possibly free) tools, there should be a number of them
around.
