Can you increase a field size above 255

I want to know if or how you can increase the field size above the
maximum of 255 characters. This is a pain to me and probably many
others. It has probably been posted in the past but I am new to the
forum and thought it would be easier to find the answer this way. Any
help will be appreciated. Thanks

Set the field's data type to Memo, not Text.
