Can you have your my docs file on a different partition?

Hi,

Is there a way to have XP's MyDocs folder be on a different partition? I
was thinking, if it could, then all the data would be on the 2nd partition,
not on the one with XP, and then if the partition with XP on it had to be
reformatted, and XP had to be reloaded, then all the data would still be
there on the other partition. Is this possible?

Download and install TweakUI:

Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP (TweakUI)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

After installing, go to Start > Programs > PowerToys for Windows XP >
TweakUI. Expand "My Computer" and click on "Special Folders".
You can easily change the location of your folders there.

Yes, and I see that you've already gotten an answre and been told
how.

I wanted to add two comments:

1. The concept "if the partition with XP on it had to be
reformatted, and XP had to be reloaded" is based on the thought
that this is likely. But despite the number of people who
recommend you do this at the drop of a hat, it is actually
extremely rare that this needs to be done. It is the wrong
solution to almost every problem.

2. The nature of your question suggests that you have no backup
scheme in place for your data. If you did, regardless of what
partition My Documents was on, your data would still be there on
the backup media. regardless of whether you believe the I made
above, the need for backup is paramount, and far more important
than what partition My Documents is on.
 
Actually XP has this function built-in. Just right click My
Computer (on the Start Menu) and select properties. There
is a "move" button. It will ask if you want to move all the
previous files to the new location, click yes. Do this for
each user.

Yes, you can do that. Tweakui (a free Microsoft download) has the
ability to move and/or rename "special folders", including "My
Documents", "My Pictures" and "My Music". I have dual boot (98SE on C:,
XP on D: and all data for both OS' on E:) and thus moved XP's "My
Documents" to E:. Note, there will still be a "documents and settings"
folders on D: but they won't be the "My Documents" folder.
