My ASUS MB lost on board sound and I tried pci sound cards but it still
won't work. This is a A7N8X-X btw. I started a reinstall of XP thinking
it'll overwrite itself and retain its settings like 98 used to do but I get
going and it stalls with 33 mins left trying to install network settings. Is
there a way to cancel the set up and get back to the os prior to this or did
I really f it up and need to reformat and start again.?

Thanks

There is no going backwards at this point. Determine why it's stalling.
Check voltages of PSU, temps, test memory with http://www.memtest86.com,
and if all else fails then seek fellow users of motherboard, threads at
someplace like http://forums.pcper.com/forumdisplay.php?f=8

Make sure it reboots from the hard drive (not the CD-ROM)
after the initial format and file copy.

Boot into the BIOS. Disable the network card and the sound card.
Remove the new sound card.

Then try it again.

Remember to honor our troops...past and present.

And have a nice Memorial Day weekend.
