Can you add the automatic chapter feature to an existing document

I have a pre-existing manual that I am trying to update - one of the features
that I would like to have is the chapters and chapter and page numbers added
- is there a way to do this on an existing document without messing up the
whole document?
 
Consider asking your question in a Word news group. This NG is for MS Access
database design questions.
 
Can you clarify for me where the existing manual is stored, Word or Access?
