Can windows updates be safely installed on Windows-Powered NAS?

Our Dell PV 770N NAS "device" crashed 2 days ago and I had to reinstall the
OS. This OS displays "Windows Powered" as the OS type, although it looks
and behaves a lot like Windows 2000. My question is, since it's not branded
Windows 2000, is it safe to install critical updates and security hotfixes
from our SUS server onto this NAS appliance? Dell says "probably".
Winternals refuses to support it. I don't know what Microsoft says because
I don't have a support contract with them.

Anyone have any experience with this issue? I'm beginning to wonder if one
of Microsoft's updates may have contributed to the OS crash.

I'm using a Dell 725N NAS appliance, which is similar to
yours and it also has that "Windows Powered" logo. This is
still a complete Windows 2000 OS, simply with added
application features from Dell (you can see them in the
services console). You can actually Terminal Service into
it to manage it, provided you install the Terminal Service
components. So therefore, yes, you can go ahead and apply
updates from Microsoft with no problems, at least I haven't
had any.
