Can the Canon MP780 use water-based (3e) colour cartridges?

Just bought my Dad a Canon MP780 as it looks like the closest current
version of my MPC600F which has been a pretty good machine.

One important difference is 5 ink carts rather than four - the big
black one uses the 3e (water-based) ink like mine for basic printing,
the other 4 are YMC&B cartridges labelled 6e (I think) and I'm told
their inks are oil-based. I presume this is for better photo printing.

My question is whether these oil based inks are much more expensive to
refill, and if so, can the 3e colour cartridges be used instead if
quality photo printing is not a priority?

I'm using the refill inks from MIS for the Canon iP4000 (which is the
same printer type as the MP750 and MP780) in my MP750 and they work just
fine.

I'm not 100% on this but I'm pretty sure they're not oil based though...

The BCI-3ebk and the BCI-6 cartridges for your MP780 are water based,
however the BCI-3ebk uses pigment while the BCI-6 uses dye for their
color.

I'm not aware of any consumer inkjet that uses oil based inks. I'm not
aware of any thermal based inkjet that can use oils. This sort of
media I believe is reserved for piezo based printheads...
Rastergraphics comes to mind. I'm sure epson has a model that'll do it
in the wide class... i.e. printers larger than your desk. And even in
that class I don't know of any one who actually uses oil-based ink.

You'd use oils, solvent, or UV curing inks in situations where you want
to print something for outdoor use. While I'm sure there is a market
for this on the consumer level, I don't know any offical solution.

The bci-3e and bci-6 are very similar... some believe it to be the same
thing. Others say there is a color difference. Most bulk refill kits
offer the same ink for both the bci-3e and the bci-6. Both are water
based.
 
HE NEEDS HELP TO CLOG THE NEW PRINTER. I AM SURE HE WILL FIND IT HERE.

HE DOES NOT KNOW WHAT INK HE USES. ALL HE KNOWS IS IT HAS AN MIS LABEL
ON THEM. THE VENDOR WILL NOT TELL HIM WHAT HE IS USING.
I'm not 100% on this but I'm pretty sure they're not oil based though...
