I have been trying to build an image for a machine with an old motherboard.
This has proved unsuccessful. However, I got a basic pre-built image from the
motherboard's manufacturer which runs. Can I run TAP in that image so as to
import it into XPe target designer?

I can't see why not. Have you tried? It's likely your problems are
related to missing drivers. What sort of problems are you having?

Yes, should be no problem at all. I also did this on the "old"
version, because I did not want to waste my time installing a normal
XP before being able to go on.

I have an old motherboard (SBC 84500) that I have upgraded it's BIOS so I can
boot from a CF. I had installed Win XP Pro on it using a hard drive so as to
get the drivers using TAP. It ran on it though slow because it wasn't really
meant for it. However, a few drivers were missing even when I had installed
the board drivers.
The manufacturers say Win XP can run on it though it's not advisable because
the processor is to solve. However, they also say Win eXP can run on it. I
have been given a simple XP image download to try on it. At present, I am
trying to install it though it keeps complaining of low virtual memory during
FBA. I guess it's because the CF is only 1GB.
The possibility of the cause of the problem I had reported is likely due to
missing drivers because at a stage during this long experiment it had
complained about the hal.dll. I tried playing a fast one by substituting the
hal.dll file the eXP image had with the one that worked with XP Pro but it
wasn't successful.

Installing XP Pro is going to require more the 1GB of storage space. If
there is a smaller XPe image available, run TAP.EXE on it. Just be aware
that you might not capture all the drivers more specifically the codecs for
meultimedia.

TA.EXE is possisble, but it doesn't capture everything required to boot an
image -

The XP Pro was installed on a 20 GB hard drive. Then it wasn't complaining of
low virtual memory. It's when I install the small XPe image on the 1GB
compact flash that I get that complaint even though it goes on to install it
but has problems installing some DLLs. I will try booting with WinPE as Ethan
has suggested.
