Robert,

You have MSBlaster - one of its many variants.

You need to quickly:
1) Install a firewall, or get a NAT router that supports PPP
(assuming your ISP provides PPP compatible dialup), to protect you
from reinfection.
2) Remove the infection. Check out these articles:
http://www.sophos.com/support/disinfection/blastera.html
http://www.visualante.org/msblast/
3) Go to http://WindowsUpdate.Microsoft.com and apply all updates
(including MS03-039 / MS03-026).

If you remove the infection, then reconnect to get MS03-039 without
protection (firewall or router), you will be reinfected before you can
download the updates. You spread the infection as long as you are
online. The infection uses network resources to spread, which affects
everybody.

If you cannot get a firewall or router immediately, you will need to
download MS03-039 from another computer and transfer the update to
CD-ROM or other large media. Here's the download link for MS03-039
for Win2K (WARNING: long link and it wraps):
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...56-E7CE-44C3-8B94-817EA8485DD1&displaylang=en

You should have a firewall or router anyway - and both if possible.
PLEASE get protection - for yourself and everybody else.

Cheers,

Chuck

I have been having the exact same problem with my computer
saying error log windows needs to be restarted and then it
won't let me off the internet. Has anyone helped you?

Restart in Safe mode, goto windows\system32\win folder (OR
winnt\system32\wins).
Shift Delete any files called svrhost.exe and dllhost.exe, these belong to
the Nachi or Blaster virus.

Obtain some upto date AntiVirus software and update using the OS using
Windows Update.

Hope this helps,

Rob.

I have a similar problem and get the same error message,
but under slightly different circumstances. Mine involves
Novell's Groupwise, which interacts badly with the
registry entries that control telephone locations for the
dial-up server. Apparently, Microsoft originally
programmed the registry entries for Locations starting
with a "0" (zero) entry for Win2000, when earlier versions
started with a "1". There are some other behaviors for
this server that were changed in Win2K. Novell
programmers expected the behavior of the earlier versions
to be carried over to Win 2k. That causes corruption of
the registry and gives the SVCHOST error.

I don't know if the changes were intentional or just
sloppy program development management. Whatever the case,
Micorsoft has not, to my knowledge, issued a fix, and the
ones that Novell has issued don't seem to hold. I am
pretty frustrated with both companies' behavior on this
subject, and even more embarrassed as a Microsoft
shareholder to even suspect that this kind of stuff might
have been intentional. Whatever the cause, neither
company has lived up to its obligations to its customers
in trying to remedy the situation.

Check out "Q319161 - Error Message When You Try to Dial a
Connection Svchost_exe Has Generated Errors and Will Be
Closed by Windows" in the Microsoft knowledgebase for more
info. DGS
