Very recently I had a virus (w32/gaobot). Whilst I am thankfully well rid of
the virus I am curious how I got it. You were all very helpful to me when I
needed your help with this virus, but can some one answer me a few questions
please.
If I reset my laptop back to factory settings using the cd that it came
with, shouldn't the virus been deleted with this process?
If it was deleted at this time, all I did was to install my cable, and then
directly install my mcafee AV and d/l the updates. As soon as I had done
this, the virus appeared on my laptop. I didn't surf, or d/l anything only
the updates for my AV.
So how did I get the same virus over and over again (8 times in all after
each reset to factory settings)?
I appreciate any feed back from you, because if I have to use my reset cd
again, I would like to know that I didn't get the virus from mcafee updates
or from installing my NTL cable.
Thanks again for any info.

yes

This virus can get in system, afaik, if you haven't applied two patches from
microsoft

because you had no patches installed when you went online

there is more information about that virus, and what vulnerabilities it uses
to get in system. Get patches to cd-r or floppys or so, and do not even keep
net cable on computer when do installs. after windows install, first thing
use those two patches. Some firewall would also most likely keep you safe
from harms way.

There are several variations of the worm you got, and most make use of
vulnerabilites in Windows RPC. It's sneaking in on the 'net, not in an
infected file, as traditional viruses do. Before connecting the PC to the
internet, install a firewall (such as ZoneAlarm, for example) to block
unwanted connections. First thing to do when you connect the reconfigured PC
is get the Windows critical updates.

If it still sneaks in, rather than rebuild your system, follow the removal
instructions you will find at McAffee or at www.sarc.com (Norton AV).

Not all virus go away when a restore is done, some take
the computer to be reformatted. Does the Mcafee get rid
of the virus? If not try the trail version of norton and
get a firewall.>-----Original Message-----
