can receive but not send mail

I have the same problem that several others in the string are experiencing.
I can receive, but not send mail. I had been able to do both just fine until
this week. I've checked all the connection and server settings, checked
"sever requires authentication," etc. My Antivirus is McAfee and I noticed
from other replies to this problem that it may be the cause. Any thoughts as
to what to do with configuring McAfee? Any thoughts why this problem should
suddenly appear, when it hasn't before?

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection. Beside that,
McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and need to be
uninstalled.

Same problem here.....New Dell XPS 410 with Windows Vista Ultimate and
Microsoft Small Business Office Outlook 2007. I can receive but NOT send
emails. When I do try and send an email I get an icon that pops up in the
system tray that says, "Microsoft Office Outlook is Synchronizing Folders".
This runs forever and I eventually have to CTRL, ALT, DEL and shut down. I've
checked everything I can but no solution yet. I do not think this is being
caused by other software McAfee, Norton or any other software. I think this
is an issue with Office Outlook dating back to the 2003 version. I read many
comments about Office Outlook 2003 doing the same thing. Good Luck. I anyone
finds a solutions let me know. Thanks!

My wife ran into this problem with her new computer. She has Windows Vista
and MS Mail. I tore my hair out trying to figure it out for several hours.
Then I discovered the problem. When she entered her addresses in her new
address book, she accidently used commas instead of periods on half a dozen
e-mail addresses. Everytime one of these people was on her address list she
got a message that the computer could not connect to the server. Strange
message for what the problem was. When she corrected the addresses, the mail
went out fine.

Two problems met since inception of this application :

Cannot open attachments while receiving Emails and
Cannot send any message out.

Yesterday, it was possible to send out messages but not read the
attachments.

Is this relative to the anti-virus we have installed?
Quite urgent. thanks for your quick response.
Regards.

I have had the same problem for the last 2 days. Mail comes in OK, but sits
in the Outbox and never goes out. I've had the same security programs for
months & have had no problems, but in the last 3 days I can't get mail to go
out. Very puzzling.

1. I assume you're asking about Windows Mail, not Outlook.
2. If you right click a message with an attachment and choose Properties
what is the message size?
3. What is the attachment extension (the letters after the dot)?
4. Do you get an error message when you try to send? What is it?
5. Are there non-deletable messages in the Outbox?
6. What anti-virus do you use?

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no

See http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/
Please read ALL of the instructions.

I also run McAfee and also SpySweeper and I think somehow the problem has
to be with McAfee. I'm running Windows Vista and using Comcast.net as my
account. No problems at all for 3 months, and then Saturday my ability to
send e-mail just went away.

Anybody else having the same problem? What security programs are you using?

Get rid of McAfee before it bites you.

AVG or Avast are free alternatives that actually work with Vista.

McAfee un-installed, but the e-mail problem persists. Crazy. I can send
from Comcast.net's page but not from Web Mail. Problem just popped up
2 days ago for no visible reason, I've been using Web mail with Vista for
almost 3 months. Haven't changed any settings. All my outgoing mail for
the last 2 days just sits in my outbox and never goes out. I don't get an
error message, but the mail doesn't go out. If I ever meet Bill Gates
I'm going to kick his skinny ass and give him a haircut.

Two things.
If you can't move or delete the messages in your outbox, get WMUtil
and use its Clear Outbox function:
http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil

If it still doesn't work, McAfee may have corrupted your mail account.
Recreate the account in Windows Mail, then delete the old account.

If that doesn't fix it, upgrade to Windows Live Mail.

I seem to recall that occasionally an account may need to be deleted
and recreated after uninstalling naff antivirus s/w.
It is worth a try.

That's a huge part of my frustration. I have changed NOTHING regarding
anti-virus software, computer settings, etc. Just woke up Saturday morning
and none of my outgoing mail would go out properly. Makes zero sense to me.
And the fact that I see a bunch of people with a similar problem cropping up
around the same time?? Who knows what that means.....

Hi. I have had this same problem since 20th July. I have a new Dell PC
running Vista Home Premium, Windows Mail and McAfee, and my email
account is with btinternet. Everything has been working fine up untill
the 20th when I suddenly couldn't send emails. Everytime I try to send
an email, a window pops up asking me to enter my email account ID and
password...everytime I enter the details, the window just pops up again.
I haven't made any changes to any settings to cause this. I have tried
solutions that I have read on this site i.e. 1. turned off all email
scanning in McAfee, 2. Reset Windows Mail (deleted everything from the
windows mail folder and then manually copied back in from a backup
excluding the .fol files). 3. Deleted and recreated my email account. I
am reluctant to uninstall McAfee because a) Why would it suddenly cause
this after working fine for a month b) I have read on another post that
this didn't solve the problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you are determined to stick with McAfee (who paid Dell
for the right to infect your computer) you are probably beyond
helping by anyone on this forum.

ps. without access to the source code it is not possible for
anyone to accurately state why McAfee screws WM.

pps. without knowing the full error messages and codes
your claims about other unsolved problems is highly dubious.

Unless you uninstall McAfee, a proven troublemaker for Windows Mail,
we can't help you any further.

One of the ways McAfee does damage is to corrupt the file where
email account passwords are stored. After you uninstall McAfee,
you may have to recreate that corrupted account in Windows Mail.
