Hi. I'm very new to using XP Home & have just installed Messenger. Whenever
someone tries to accept a file that I send, it times out & I can't see how
to change that. I've read that I need to enable incoming & outgoing TCP
connections to use ports 6891-6900 but I can't see how to do that either.
The help file tells me about changing the network connection settings, but
nothing about specifying ports. I know virtually nothing about these
things, so help with these issues would be much appreciated. TIA.

Greetings,

Are you just using Windows Messenger built-in to Windows XP? If so, you might want to
consider installing MSN Messenger 6.x instead, simply because it has the ability to send
files through a greater majority of situations (even uses a dynamic port range besides the
6891-6900 range), allows UPnP-enabled file transfer and file transfers through the MSN
Messenger server itself. You can find MSN Messenger here:
http://messenger.msn.com/Download

If you'd rather not upgrade to MSN Messenger, or that is what you're using, instead of giving
out a 5000 word essay on every possible reason you could be seeing this problem -- are you
using a router and do you have any sort of third-party firewall installed?

Thanks for replying. I've had the same problem with the XP Messenger & MSN
Messenger - I've just installed MSN Messenger 6.2. I'm using Kerio Personal
Firewall - I tried Sygate Personal Firewall, but that stopped me logging
into Messenger completely so I've uninstalled it & gone back to Kerio.

I've been playing with some of the settings, & all of a sudden MSN
Messenger started to work & a file has gone through at long last! I'll keep
monitoring it for the next few hours to see if it stays that way. Thanks
for your help.
