Can posts to this news group be screened or bounced?

I pasted the following from a previous post to this news group. It seems to
indicate that posts can be screened and if necessary bounced [removed?] from
the group. Is this true? Also, if it is true, why are there so many phony
Microsoft antivirus messages and porno advertisements? Is there someone who
has the authority to purge the news group of these unwelcome and potentially
harmful posts?

Hi Art

As I understand it, the nature of usenet is that there is one big msnews server. But lots (ie hundreds? thousands?) of servers
(such as those that belong to ISPs) also carry the newsgroup. Some users post direct to the msnews server; and others post through
their ISP's server. Only Microsoft can delete messages on its server, and the other servers may or may not also delete them.

I can't speak for Microsoft, but I think it's fair to say that MS is aware of the spam and porno advertisements that have recently
hit newsgroups. I trust that they're taking appropriate action.

And just for the record, Microsoft NEVER issues patches to software as attachments to emails or newsgroup messages. MS security
bulletins NEVER have attachments. Microsoft only ever makes patches available for download from its websites. See
http://www.microsoft.com/security/antivirus/authenticate_mail.asp

I share your frustration!

Reading the article will help you get a quick and meaningful
response to your question rather than just more questions for you.
It may keep your message from being screened or bounced.

Dear Shauna,

Thanks for your reply. For some reason I thought that the recent switch in
news groups was to try to get a handle on all of the useless and dangerous
junk that clutters them up. I imagine it would be a full-time job trying to
monitor the groups. Maybe they need some type of "spaminator" software to
help keep up with the problem posts.

It would be a real shame for someone to log on looking for help with a
problem only to end-up downloading a new virus.
