Is there ANY way to disable plug and play monitor
in windows 2000?

Im using a 16x9 aspect ratio LCD projector,
Connected via DVI cable.

When i set the desktop resolution to 1360x768,
I get a 1024x768 active pixels and you have to
scroll <-left right-> to see the rest of the desktop.

I hooked it up to a win98 machine, and had the same
problem, but was able to get it to display 1360x768
active pixels but going to...
Display Properties ---> Monitors Tab and disabling
plug and play monitor support.

Windows 2000 does NOT have this checkbox on the monitors
tab.

What registry setting can I change to achieve the same
result?

Display is a Sanyo PLV-70
Video card Geforce TI4200 with Detonator 52.16 driver
Windows 2000 with (versions/updates) current.

Please help!

Thanks,

Dave Clifford

Dave, are you sure you have the correct/latest monitor INF file
from Sanyo? If the monitor type in Device Manager is showing
as "Plug and Play Monitor" instead of the actual manufacturer/
model then the INF file is not properly installed.

The device is correctly identified as a PLV-70.
This identification comes from the 128 byte EDID
via the plug and play system

Devices on DVI do not use monitor.inf files. (with PnP)
Using a back door phone number I got from an
OEM manufacturer I called and verified this with Nvidia,
I spoke directly with one of the authors of the Detonator
52.16 driver.

He said, if its on a DVI interface, the EDID info
from the device is all the driver will use, (as long
as it is able to get that info from the plug and play
system)

In order to get my desired resolution, I have to do
one of 3 things.

1. Disable the plug and play monitor detection.
2. Get a firmware upgrade that fixes the EDID bug.
3. Find some way to override the EDID info.

#1 seemed the most direct route. There must be a registry
setting to disable DDC like win98 did.

#2 got blown off by sanyo about a firmware upgrade,
the said that maybe they would consider this for their
next generation projector. (i just bought this one for $5K
ive no plans to buy another)

#3 This would be very useful if anyone knows how its done.

What he didn't explain clearly, when referring to a projector, is that this
is the Sanyo PLV-70 projector, not a monitor, used mostly in home theater
systems.

Frankly, if you got a "backdoor" to call Nvidia, get a "backdoor" to call
Sanyo and learn how to set it up correctly. I am sure they know more about
their projectors than Nvidia.

I did speak to Sanyo. As mentioned previously.
Sanyo says that the projector is 1366x768 native.
but since they felt 4x3 was more "standard" for pc,
they put XGA as the max res when they made the EDID.
Since the EDID reports 1024x768 as max res, the driver
is "protecting" the display from a possibly harmful
unsupported resolution. However, WXGA would be more
native for the display. Sanyo is not interested in making
any firmware upgrades, apparently they dont care enough
about it at this time, and told me that it might be done
in their next product. that of course does not help me.
I could not find any firmware of any version for the
plv70, I looked in hopes of finding something and then
HEX editing it to hand modify the 128 byte EDID info.
If anyone knows how I can edit the projectors EDID info
that would be helpful.

In looking for a solution, I went next to Nvidia because
I hoped that they might have a version of the driver that
allowed the user to override the EDID settings (like ATI
driver does). Nvidia reports negative on that.

My last chance and hope was to be able to diable PnP
Monitor support, thus rendering the EDID inaccessible, and
forcing the use of the plv70.inf that i created.

According to the DVI pinout:

One option might be to either insulate or remove pin 7 of the
DVI connector, which would (or at least should) block EDID
information from being received by the computer. I have no
idea what other ramifications this might have, so be careful.

If the display can accept either digital or analog input there
might be other workarounds.
