Can Ping DNS Server, but will not resolve

I had to reinstall XP because of file corruption and am
having some issues with hitting my provider's DNS. I can
ping the DNS servers without an issue, but can not get a
response to a DNS query (it says that the DNS server is
unavailable). I know the DNS servers are available
because I can hit them and resolve from my other system.

I suspect I need to reinstall that service, but don't seem
to be able to. I have completely uninstalled and
reinstalled my adapter. Is there a way to actually
manually uninstall and reinstall TCP/IP? Has anyone else
seen this?

Thanks

Are you doing a static IP or DHCP to your ISP ? If it's
DHCP, go to a DOS prompt and do a ipconfig to see your
current IP. Then do a ipconfig/release followed by a
ipconfig/renew.

Static IP and the config is OK. I've seen this happen on
ME before and uninstalling and reinstalling TCP/IP Fixed
it, but can't seem to do this in XP.

You can remove and reload TCP/IP by:

Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->Network Connections
Right click on "Local Area Connections"
Scroll down and single-click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)"
Click "Remove"

Reinstallation follows a similar process only click the "Install" button
instead.

Let us know how it goes.

Unfortunatly the Remove/Uninstall option never becomes
available and it won't let me install it again unless I
remove it.

Thanks

Do this at the Start/Run prompt:

netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

.....which will refresh your tcp/ip for you.

BTW, a lot of ISPs don't allow certain things to be pinged. Yours may be
ignoring pings at their DNS.
