Please read my post below from yesterday that has this
same subject:

"can ping by ip but not by name"

The problem has changed, I can now no longer ping by ip
nor by name or fqdn. Yet, I can go to start, run, and
type: \\billing14\c$ and it connects fine. Kevin had
responded and asked if the machine is registering in DNS.
To be honest, I don't even know how to check that. Any
help is much appreciated, thanks.

Hi Mark. Thank-you for your post.

Hi,

I have figured out the problem, but I'm not sure how to
fix it. When pinging the machine by name, it is trying to
ping the address 172.28.228.73 when in fact, the machine's
real ip address is 172.28.228.43, so it must be in the dns
table incorrectly and it's not updating or something. I
tried a release and renew, but that didn't help. Even
when I ran nslookup, it had the machine listed with the
incorrect ip address. So how does one fix that? Thanks.

You can manually delete the record. Make sure you are only using your
internal DNS in IP properties, otherwise is also using another DNS server
(such as your ISP's), it maybe trying to register it elsewhere. That's a
basic rule for AD, use ONLY the internal, and configure a forwarder for
efficient Internet resolution, or other problems *will* develop.
