Evan

I can ping any internal or external machine by IP address. I cannot ping or
tracert by name. I cannot reach any machine through IE either by name or IP.
I cannot even reach the router or modem software through IE. I have two NICS
and I have tried both. I run ipconfig/all and everything is set properly.
Every other machine on the LAN works fine. I have tried connecting the DSL
modem directly to the machine and that does not work either, even though I
can ping the gateway, dns server, etc.

Background: Everything was fine until DSL went down. I called the provider
and they had no ETA. My plan was to go back to our old satelite connection,
which used a USB connection in my machine which I shared through ICS. I set
all of that up and realized I did not have the IP info for them, so I
removed the usb device. I then tried to go back and sign into dsl, but got
an error message in IE "Cannot open site". Although I had not gotten as far
as to share the satellite connection adn no other connection is shared, when
I ran ipconfig/all it reported IP routing enabled. I checked the registry
and it was NOT disabled. I enabled ICS on dsl when I connected it to the
machine and then disabled it, now ipconfig/all shows IP routing not enabled
so that is okay but still no luck. I even tried uninstalling TCP/IP from all
connections, rebooting, reinstalling, rebooting and nothing.

I am very confused because all the setting that were working before are the
same. I think something got hosed when I tried to reinstall the satellite
connection as a temporary fix for my coworkers. I have no idea how to
proceed from here. Any thoughts?

It's not clear what OS your are running here.

So we know that IP itself is working and name resolution is
broken. (All pings really travel by IP.)
I cannot reach any machine through IE either by name or IP.

But we have a discrepancy -- if you can PING by IP then you
can almost always use IE by IP (unless there is a Proxy/ISA/
other firewall that requires some special access or filters web
traffic.

If you cannot use IE on a local lan by IP but you can ping then
something is likely wrong with your URL typing.
I cannot even reach the router or modem software through IE. I have two
NICS

Well, the router and modem may not have a Web server installed
and IE normally visits WWW type servers. If your router does have
a WWW server installed it may be on some odd address (mine ran
on a fixed 192.168.0.x address for MANAGEMENT only.)
and I have tried both. I run ipconfig/all and everything is set properly.

Well, when you are having such contradictory problems it is probably
better to post the IPconfig /all than to say "everything is set properly"
-- other eyes might find a mistale.

What happens when you use NSLookup against the DNS server?
Or Telnet Web.Ser.ver.Addr 80 (hit enter twice more)

You probably have something hard to see misconfigured in the
IP properties.

Okay, first off this is a Win 2k Pro machine.

I can reach the software for router and modem on ANY other machine. The
other machines are Win2k, Me, Xp, 98.

I wish it was as simple as url mis-typing.

I have shut off zone alarm and disbled McAfee (whcih supposedly does come
wiht a firewall although I dont know how it is configured). I will head to
my office in a bit and post the ipconfig and try the other suggestions.

One more thing, I can ping local machines by name or IP.

I am starting to think that something is actually blocking it. Would it be
possible to ping the dns server address, yet still be blocked when trying to
resolve a name? Why would I be able to ping an external address, yet not
access it through IE when using IP? Obviously, my knowledge is limitted on
this subject. I appreciate the help/patience.

Try changing the DHCP options on the Linksys so that the DNS server(s) are
your ISP's...

Ok here is an update now from my office:

I cannot ping local machines by name although I would swear I did yesterday.

I cannot browse network through windows explorer: "Access denied or path not
found."

Other machines cannot ping me by name or IP

Here is output from ipconfig/all, NSLookup, telnet: (Note that adapter "DSL"
is not in use now, but I have tried using that as well and also connecting
the dsl modem without the router directly to both NICs). Thanks again for
the help.

Sorry, I thought I'd cancelled my post as when I re-read the full thread, I
realized I was lost.
When I look at the the DNS entry in the modem management software it
is blank and has a check next to "use wan". Remember that
192.168.254.254 works perfectly on every other system and worked on
this system before. Also, the default should have read 192.168.2.1.
Somewhere in my rebooting and changing the node-type to "mixed" since
that is what the other Win2K machine has, I am now able to ping local
machines by name and tghey can ping me by IP or name. Still cant ping
outside names, reach modem or router softrware, reach anything
through IE. "Lanwench [MVP - Exchange]"

we have seen a lot cases like this. this may help quoted form

Can ping public IPs but not web sites

Symptoms: 1. You can ping any public IPs but not web sites. 2. The routing
table and ipconfig look OK but you can't browse any web sites.

Resolutions: 1. Check the DNS, for example using nslookup to
troubleshooting.
2. To test, disable any firewall. If it works after disabling firewall,
re-configure the firewall and make sure the firewall doesn't black port 43..
3. Check the status of winsock.dll, wsock32.dll or download winsockfix to
fix the problem
4. Also try to disable DNS client service if you don't have domain network
or use ipconfig /flushdns to purge the DNS resolver cache.
5. Apply SP.
6. Try to logon another user.
7. Check Event Viewer for any errors
8. Remove and re-install NIC with latest drive.
9. Assign static IP, Gateway and DNS manually.

Thanks for the info. I tried everything listed, and then some. After a
combination of the winsockfix and ipconfig/dnsflush I was able to ping
yahoo.com but not browse. I rebooted and tried again and nothing, not even
ping yahoo.com. Tried a billion other things. Eventually, reverted IE to 5.5
in an attempt to delete it entirely. I was unable to remove it so proceeded
to physically remove both NICs, reboot, reinstall one NIC, reboot, ran
winsockfix, reboot, ipconfig/dnsflush and now it works! It has survived
another reboot and still works. I am scared it may not last but fro now it
is going strong. Thanks again.

You know you might have mention to start that you
are running TWO FIREWALLS on this machine or
that apparently you are dialed-up (that part still isn't
clear but you did mention a modem-config.)

It's generally a bad idea to have two firewalls -- results
are unpredictable.

Zone Alarm itself -- alone -- can be stubbornly difficult
to use at times.

Dont know where you got the idea I was on dial up. I mentioned the firewall
when it occured to me.

Hi Evan,

Thank you for the posting.

Based on your description, we are providing you with the following
suggestions.

1. Disable firewall

2. Check the DNS

nslookup
ipconfig /flushdns

3. Assign static IP, Default Gateway and DNS manually.

ipconfig /all on other network working machine and record their exact IP
addresses settings.
manually assign static IP in the same network segment, the same Default
Gateway and the same DNS server.

4. Reset winsock

Export to backup the following winsock and winosck2 registry key and then
delete them

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2

Uninstall TCP/IP from "Network and Dial-up Connections" properties.

Reinstall TCP/IP from "Network and Dial-up Connections" properties.

After you delete the two registry keys and then uninstall and reinstall
TCP/IP the winsock can be reset.

Hope the above information and suggestion helps and answers your question.
If anything is unclear, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Cherry Qian
