can outlook "pencil" in a meeting that I have not opened yet?

When a meeting request arrives into my inbox, can outlook put the meeting
into my calendar as "tentative" or something until I reply to it? My issue
is that I am getting meeting request and they are not showing up in my
calendar until I respond. As you can guess, I have missed a meeting due to
this.

It should do that by default. What acceptance options do you have chosen on
Tools>Options>Calendar Options>Resource Scheduling?
 
I had a rule in place that moved my meeting requests to another folder. This
stopped the insertion into the calendar. I filtered my rule by ignoring
meeting request. Please disregard my posting and thank you.
 
I'm having a similar problem. I want to auto accept all meeting requests. I
chose this option through 'resource scheduling', but it only works if the
person inviting me schedules me as a resource. Otherwise, it comes into my
inbox. I don't actually have to 'read' my email, but I DO have to at least
stop on the email in order for it to do anything. When I do that, it puts it
onto my calendar as "tentative". I thought I figured out a way by setting up
a rule to put all my meeting requests into a folder, but that folder reacts
the same - I have to actually stop on the email to get it to appear on the
calendar. This is even if I go into the new folder and select "mark all as
read". What am I doing wrong?
