Can old MS-Mail (postoffice) run on a W2K server?

Currently running MS-Mail for inter-office e-mail on an NT-4 server.
Are exploring migrating this server to W2K. Would like to maintain
MS-Mail (postoffice). Do not want to use Exchange server. Does
MS-Mail come with W2K/Pro/Server? If the MS-Mail setup files are
located and moved to the W2K machine can it be installed and run?

PS: Is XP compatible with MS-Mail as run on an NT machine? (we have
not yet been successful in getting an XP machine to be able to log-on
to an NT machine to access an MS-Mail post office).

I don't believe it's possible, but even if it were, why would you want to
use such unsupported, non Y2k compliant, ancient software? It wasn't even
all that good, as I recall. There are other options besides Exchange...if
you want workgroup mail, check out Kerio Mail Server. I know someone who's
installed it and seems quite pleased.

You can't use MSMail in any version of Outlook higher than OL2000 anyway.

Yes. Currently runnng it in 2 sites.
Butnot the old one on the old OS CD's.
You need the hot fix from MS.
From MS, will probably take several weeks.
If you are interested, email me private and I'll email it to you. (its
small enough).

You can call Microsoft and request the following fix (you may obtain it free
of charge, however there is no support for this product, and it doesn't work
with XP):

254458 Windows 2000 Does Not Include Windows Messaging by Default
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=254458

To resolve this issue, contact Microsoft Product Support
Services to obtain Windows Messaging for Windows 2000. For information
about
how to contact Product Support Services, see the following Microsoft Web
site:

http://support.microsoft.com/directory/question.asp?sd=gn&fr=0

NOTE: Windows Messaging is supplied as is with no product support. It
is supplied to aid in migrating to later technologies that replace
Simple MAPI.
You can also get MAPI support by installing a client such as Microsoft
Outlook
2000 in Corporate or Workgroup mode.
