Can Not Update Desktop Background.

hello, I can not change the background picture of my machine.
I've treid two steps, 1) fund a pictue I liked, right click, selected "set
as back ground" and nothing changed. 2) Went to control panel, apparence and
themes, changed the desk top background select picture and no change.
However, with this second method, it appears the new background setting
appears for only a moment and then I go back to the old background which I
didn't want. Any help would be appreciated.

Assuming that 1) your computer is virus/malware-free; and 2) you have a
standalone home machine that is not a member of a domain or in a work
setting:

Go to the Display applet in Control Panel and look on the Desktop tab.
Click on Customize Desktop, and then click on the Web tab. You will see
that there are checkmarks next to "My Current Home Page" and probably
"Lock Desktop Items". Uncheck these. Apply/OK out.
