windows2000-msn6.x -- windows2000-msn6.x: file transfer OK.

but
windows-xp-msn4.7 -- windows2000-msn6.x: file transfer FAILED.

Greetings Shark,

MSN Messenger 6.x has a completely different file transfer protocol than Windows Messenger
4.7 (for the record, there is *no* MSN Messenger 4.7). Whenever an older client is used
(i.e. Windows Messenger), MSN Messenger will make use of the older protocol which in 4.7 does
not support UPnP file transfer nor allow file transfers through the Messenger server itself.
As such, why one is working and one is not.

Assuming no NAT is in use (router/internet sharing of some kind), the Windows XP firewall may
simply be engaged, which will stop file *sending* from being successful on the Windows
Messenger 4.7 side. You can simply setup the Internet Connection Firewall to open the
necessary ports to send files (note that this refers to Windows Messenger, *not* MSN
Messenger 6.x). To do so, click Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, then
Communications, then Network Connections. Right-click your connection, then click
Properties. For cable modem/broadband users, your Internet connection will usually be called
Local Area Connection. For dialup, it should be the name of your Internet Service Provider.
Click the Advanced Tab, and then click the Settings tab. Click the Add button and then in
the Service Settings, type in the following -- for Description enter Messenger Connection,
for Name or IP address enter 127.0.0.1, for both External and Internal ports enter 6891.
Verify TCP is selected and click OK. Now repeat the last step but change the ports to 6892,
6893, 6894, 6895, 6896, 6897, 6898, 6899, 6900. Yes, 10 (including the first one) will now be
selected. Then click OK. You should now be able to send files with the firewall enabled.

Finally, if you're still having problems, it would make much more sense to simply use MSN
Messenger 6.x instead.

Hi Shark,

Windows Messenger 5.0 will give you UPnP file transfer support (so it'll work through
NATs/routers/internet sharing that has UPnP enabled) but it does not make use of the new file
transfer protocol in MSN Messenger 6.x.
