Norton has some "behind the scenes" action on email - even if you selected
the "disable email scanning" feature. Makes, no sense - I get that - but it
is possibly still wreaking havoc on your email. That's why it was
recommended to you to uninstall it and run the Norton cleanup utility to
ensure it is gone. (If you don't tell anyone you are temporarily
unprotected nobody will know to send you a virus !!) Once you've removed it
and tested you can install one of the others - WSE doesn't have an email
component and will not interfere (I don't know about Avast but others using
it have also reported email issues - perhaps they didn't do the recommended
custom installation as Bruce described). This is all just a test, I
personally run McAfee which is also known to create issues in email but have
yet to have any (my .doc's work just fine), however, if I have some I will
switch to WSE.
Curious - are you trying to use the "Send" feature within Word itself? If
so, you may need to do another variation of the "set defaults". Also, I
don't believe that feature works at all in the Home and Student version of
Office - so you have to create the .doc, save, close, open WM, create the
email, do the attachment there. Let us know if any of this applies.

ok, did not remove norton but did enable it from scaning out going
messages
and that did not work so i dont think its norton, also checked to see if
Word
Document is open or in use by another application like "slk759" said and
there was no doc. open. so what else could it possible be?

I would suggest Avast or MSE. Download and save one. Disconnect from the
Internet and remove Norton. Run the removal tool. Install the new AV
program.
Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
In the case of Avast, choose Custom Installation and under Resident
Protection, uncheck: Internet Mail and Outlook/Exchange.
Microsoft Security Essentials:
http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/default.aspx
(No e-mail scanning to worry about)
Download and run the Norton Removal Tool:
