Can Not select or see Contacts as default address book

I tried posting this message about five hours ago. It hasn't shown up in the
board yet, so, I'll try again....
========================

In previous posts, I've noticed the instruction to go to the Contacts
Properties > Outlook Address Book tab and select "Show this folder as an
e-mail Address Book" option to have the contacts folder be accessible in the
address book. My problem is: when I go to the tab, EVERYthing is greyed out.
I cannot select the option. When I click on the "Use addresses from... "
drop-down, it is completely empty. However, my Contacts folder is populated
and I can see my contacts fine inside the folder.

I've tried the following to see if they'd fix the problem:
1. repairing my Outlook.pst using SCANPST.exe...no,
2. repairing Office XP via the install disk...no,
3. re-installing Office XP completely.....no,
4. opening up / adding a copy of my Outlook.pst from last week (when
address book WAS working).....
5. then changing the default mail folder to that pst....no,
6. copying the above pst from last week over top of the current
pst.....nope. :-(

All of the above were tried seperately with Outlook closed, except for #4 &
5, of course..... and then the address book was checked before I closed
Outlook & tried the next possible cure. Alas... none of the above corrected
the problem.

Can anyone help this poor soul get his address book/contacts working
properly????

Thanks

Just add the Outlook Address Book Service to your profile.
If you don't know how to do that, you must post your Outlook version so we
can tell you.

No, I'm not sure how to add the address book to my profile.

Unfortunately, Russ, this did not help. Here is the info from the URL where
you directed me (in part...)

How to Install the Outlook Address Book Service
1. On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
2. Click to select View or change existing directories or address books, and
then click Next.
3. If your Outlook Address Book is listed, click Cancel, and then go to the
steps in the "How to Mark Your Contact Folder for Use with Your Address Book"
section.
4. If your Outlook Address Book is not listed, click Add.
5. Click to select Additional Address Books, and then click Next.
6. Click to select Outlook Address Book, and then click Next.
7. Click OK when you receive the prompt that the address book you added will
not start until you click Exit from the File menu.
8. Click Finish.
9. Click Exit from the File menu, and then restart Outlook.
How to Mark Your Contact Folder for Use with Your Address Book
1. In the Folder List, click to select the folder you would like to use with
the Address Book. If you do not see the Folder List, click Folder List on the
View menu.
2. On the File menu, point to Folder, and then click Properties for your
folder name.
3. On the Outlook Address Book tab, click to select Show this folder as an
e-mail address book, type a descriptive name, and then click OK.

#7 in the first group of instructions never occurs. Instead I get the error
message this address book cannot be usded until it is configured correctly...
OK click brings me back to #6 (select Outlook Address Book)... endless loop.

In the second group, (from my original post you will see) the "Show this
folder as an e-mail address book" checkbox is unselectable ... all grayed out.

I've resolved my issue in the following way. Instead of using the Outlook
profile, I just created a new profile and made it the default. All items
working correctly now. Don't know WHAT glitched.. but.. at least I've got
functionality back again.

Thanks,
ericB

That simply means you had already added the Outlook Address Book once before
and then it got corrupted. In that case, you would first need to remove the
Outlook Address Book, restart Outlook, then re-add it. That's all it takes
to reset it.
Creating a new profile also resets it, but is a lot more work.

I had this same problem and tried all your solutions. The only way I could
get "Contacts" to come up without crashing Outlook 2003 was to uncheck both
"Accounts in Business Contacts Manager" & "Business Contacts in Business
Contact Manager" from the "Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book". Once
I did this, Outlook started showing my contacts in the New email "To" window
and the "Tools/Address Book" window. Not complaining, just trying to get a
Bug reported.

Not true. It is the same issue in that I was also unable to "select or see

issue. There really is no need to respond to a posting if you don't have a

I've seen this issue a thousand times. It has never resulted in Outlook's
crashing.
BCM adds a different aspect to the problem entirely.
How suggesting that you post in a more appropriate group constitutes poor
"beside manner" mystifies me. If you want to see if there are others with a
similar situation, it seems the logical thing to do.
