After upgrading 98SE to XP it will not open setup.exe files from any cd-rom. When you explore the cd-rom drive, and manually click the setup.exe, nothing happens. I took the same CD to another computer with XP on it and it opened the Setup file just fine and installed the program. I have looked in several other groups on the Windows SP user groups and find the problem ofter, but nobody seems to answer the question. Please help.

Hi,

Try cleaning up the installer.

Start/run services.msc, scroll down to "Windows Installer" and double click
it. Stop the service if it is running, set the startup type line to
disabled. Click apply/ok and reboot.

Delete the contents of the temp folders, there may be a file in there
interfering with the setup routine of the installer. Get both:

C:\Windows\temp
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\local settings\temp

Now reverse the first set of steps and reenable the Windows Installer (You
can just set the startup type to manual). Reboot.

Turn off all other running programs, especially your antivirus software. Use
ctrl+shift+escape, if necessary, to "end task" on everything.

Now retry installing some software.

Hi,

Start ending all the lines on the processes tab (the critical processes will
not let you stop them) until you can get the installer to run. Something
running is interfering.

I followed the steps exactly but no luck.

When I ctrl+shift+escape It shows setup and wowexec but has no memory
useage numbers beside either program.
I would appreciate any further help. This is really weird as these
programs were installed and will run on another computer with XP that is
just like this one.
