after reading other posts, this looks like a repeat question but i will
accept any help no matter how stupid i look.

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject 'Read: ',
Account: '(e-mail address removed)', Server: 'smtpauth.centurytel.net', Protocol:
SMTP, Server Response: '550 5.7.1 <[email protected]>... Relaying
denied: You must check for new mail before sending mail.', Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

Is Bellsouth or Centurytel your ISP?
The general rule for port 25 SMTP is that the SMTP server owner must
be the same as the provider of your Internet connectivity.
So, use your ISP's SMTP server, not somebody else's.

gary, thanks so much replying so fast.
centurytel is my dsl isp. but i have had bellsouth email address for over 6
years and it would be hard to change that email address. i have not had any
problems using both at home and on the road with this laptop. this problem
only started this past week. this problem seems to have started when i
installed 'avast virus protection and email scanner'. i tried disableing both
and running email test but it dont work.
if you have any other thoughts, please share them. thanks again.

People often connect two events that happen in the same timeframe,
but there really is no connection between the error message you got
and Avast antivirus. Avast when installed in its default configuration
*can* cause other problems, however. Uninstall it, then reinstall, but
select 'custom' install, which then allows you to forego installing the
troublesome email scanning module. Email scanning is never
advisable, for reasons explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

While Avast is uninstalled, try Windows Mail again, just to verify that
the error message has not changed.

So, when you got that error message, you were sending from home,
using your Centurytel DSL connection? If so, try this:
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties, Servers,
make sure "My server requires authentication" is checked.
