Can not publish to Local

In a response from Thomas to a problem I was having with publishing to my
host server (path changing to "local" for the hit Counter code) it was
suggested that I "open the remote site directly in FP, then publish to my
local with change page only selected, then turn around and publish back with
the same options, this should get both sites in sync".

I tried this maneuver, but close to the end of process I received a FP error
stating; "could not open bot.cnt for publishing". This resulted in the web
not being published to my local. FrontPage2000 is driving me crazy! Why
can't this Microsoft program JUST WORK right? Help!

Dan,

It sound like a problem on the remote server "could not open bot.cnt for
publishing" since it happen while publish from the remote server to your
machine. If it where on you machine, I would think the message would
indicate a problem with writing the file, not opening it if it were local.

Thomas,

I tried publishing from the remote server to my local with a different web,
on a different remote server, and had this error; could not open "bot.cnt"
file for writing. It appears my FP2000 is blocking me.

You have an illegally named file in your web "bot.cnt"

The normal format for counters is "filename.htm.cnt" with the "filename.htm" portion being the same as your page file name with the
counter in it
All the counters must be in a folder w/ write permissions, or a subfolder of that folder
- by default only the _private folder has write permissions

If you have a "html" file (web page) named "bot" it needs to be renamed bot.htm or bot.html for it to have a counter
If you don't have a web page file named "bot", find and delete the "bot.cnt" file in your online web

I looked in both my webs, on local and server. I did not find this
"bot.cnt" file. I did find the default.htm.cnt file.

Have your host check for the file
- or if you have FTP access open the online web and Browse to see if it is a hidden file put there by your host

PS also before you open FP
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
