Can not play DVD movies on my CD-ROM

Can somebody help me please? My CD-ROM can not detect any
of my DVD movies, when I run Windows Media Player the DVD
CD or CD Audio under Play it is shaded and the copy of
Intervideo WinDVD5 that I have can not detect a valid DVD
drive.
What's going on? any of you wizards out there can help me?

the problem is that you are trying to play a dvd disk in

a drive for cd's only. you have to have a dvd drive to
play dvd's
