can not open files sent via email

can anyboby help? i have been sent files via email,i
can download the files but i cannot open them. The system
tells me that mircrosoft cannot open the files untill
they what software created the files???? does this make
any sense??? I am then told to use microsoft excel to
find and open these files but i do not know how to do
this and the infomation given is of no help
whatsoever!!!!!!!! PLEASE SOMEBOBY HELP ME
