can not log on interactivly

i work for a major telco. they do not support windows remote desktop
connection. i have a laptop and desktop that both run XP Pro SP3. i set it up
a couple of years ago to remote into the desktop and recently, after i
connect to the desktop, after i try to log in at the windows log in prompt,
it tells me i am unable to log in interactivly. this is a problem with the
desktop as i can remote into other desktops.
where is the security setting that allows me to log in interactivly ?

If the account your trying to use to login with is a limited user account
make sure the account is added to the Remote Desktop Users Group and that it
has a password.

the computer uses a standard windows login and uses a domain. he can login
locally to the desktop, but when he tries to login via windows remote desktop
connection, he gets a message like 'can not log you in interactivly'. it
worked fine for years and now doesn't. i am sure that the desktop recieved
some patch that changed some setting. i contacted our IT group and their
answer was that they do not support windows remote desktop and therefor can't
help me. i asked if it was allowed and not supported and the answer was yes.
we requested admin rights to his computer and are currently waiting. once
that goe through, i want to go into admin tools in control panel and play but
was hoping that somebody had an idea where i should look.

Is the user listed in the user group: Remote Desktop Users on the local
machine? If not - add them.

It's possible your IT department got wise (after all these years) and
removed the users from the local "administrators" group. As if they were
members of the local "administrators" group - they were (by default) members
of the "Remote Desktop Users" local group as well.

Removing the users from the local "administrators" group could have had all
sorts of effects - one of which would be that the user cannot logon remotely
until someone adds them (their domain account) to the "Remote Desktop Users"
group.

The catch-22 - if you are not in the local "administrators" group - you may
be unable to add the user to the "Remote Desktop Users" group.
