My new HP desktop (AMD Sempron 3200+, 1Gmem, 80G HD) cannot be installed
windows XP. The computer was dead when it display " setup is starting
windows".
I upgraded the bios (Dec, 2005) to the lastest one but only can install
win2000.
I used HP disc to check the hardware but everything seems OK.
Don't know what happened to the machine???
New HP machine cannot install winxp???

thanks for the help
Ben

What model of HP is the machine?
How long have you had the machine/still under warantee?
Are you using the restore cd's that come from HP?
How are you trying to install the OS?

Ben,
Could the installation CD be damaged?

Ben,
Also, if you are trying to upgrade from W2K to WXP, make sure that you
have no AV progs running.

Thanks, Charlie and Mike.
It's HP Pavilion a1117cl. The feedback from HP: If u can install win 2000
means the hardware is OK.
I use CD bootup to install Winxp. This cd was tested in another PC. No
problem found.
So it puzzled me...

Ben,

Do you get any error messages when the PC hangs at setup?
You have 1Gb of RAM is this 1 * 1GB or 2 * 512MB sticks? If two, try
installing WXPwith 1 stick removed, if the problem is still there, try again
with the other stick.
If 1 stick just remove and reinsert.

Ben:

If it's a new HP machine, you'll want to call HP. They provide excellent
support for all of their equipment under warranty. (This may involve sending
the unit back to them for repair, however. They don't usually make onsite
visits.)
