Can not install printer

I upgraded from Windows ME to XP home edition. I also
installed SP1 and any other patch needed for my Dell.

I have a HP 4300 printer, which I can not install. It was
working fine under Windows ME. I get an error message
about the Spooler subsystem app needs to close. The end
result is that I can not install my printer.

I am an Administrator on the box, so that is not it.

I do not have a Lexmark printer, and have never had one,
so that is not it.

I have read KB 324757, and followed the instructions
exactly. It did not help, I still get the error messages.

My husband also has Windows XP home edition, and he can
install the same printer from the same CD with no problem,
and it prints just fine. That rules out a problem with a
bad driver.

We guess that the problem must be related to the fact that
I upgraded from Windows ME, whereas he bought a new
computer pre-installed with XP.

Does anyone have any ideas? Help!!!

KathyKii,
Have you tried installing it in safe mode, and or
installing it in safe mode then uninstalling it in safe
mode and then reinstalling it in regular mode? That's what
I would try as a next step. It may not let you do it but
it is possible and not too hard to try before pulling all
your hair out. Good luck- JerryC
