James

i have windows me,the version of IE and OE included with windows me is 5.5,
and then i upgraded IE and OE to 6.0 successfully by downloading IE6 sp1
setup program.and now i wonder,after i reinstall windows me,the version of
IE reverts back to 5.5 while OE remains 6.0. and then i run the IE6 sp1
setup program,at the end of the setup process,an error message shows up as
follows:

Setup was unable to install all the components. Please close all
applications and try running Setup again.

and then i run setup again, and another error message shows up like this:

A previous program installation was never completed. You need to restart
your computer to complete that installation before running Internet Explorer
Setup. Setup will now close.

this error message will show up when i run setup again until i restart my
computer.and after restart the same error messages show up round and round
when running setup.

what am i gonna do now? help me! thanks in advance!

James,

Try this:

Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View:
- Select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply - OK

Create a folder named "Old uninstall".

Go to folder C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information.

Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files.

Open "Old uninstall" folder and paste the files.

You will now be able to install all the troublesome components.

If everything works as expected, you can delete the "Old Uninstall" folder
and the files you moved.

Good luck,

Zee

hi Zee,thank you very much,it does the trick! i think the reason must be
that one or more files are damaged during the reinstallation, right?

James,

No, that was a very common bug with WinME and IE6SP1 that MS never admitted
or even tried to solve.

I just told you how to workaround it.

Glad it worked for you too.

Zee,

many thanks.i have never thought of this bug with WinME and IE6SP1 ,for i've
searched the knowledge base to find nothing.Well,MS should have addressed
this problem and posted it onto the knowledge base.

If you're doing a clean install of WinME (format & reinstall), there's no
way you could be running OE6.

I was just making a point that the bug is not exclusive of WinME reinstalls,
on the contrary, it was quite common with clean installs.

It doesn't sound like a bug as much as a designed limitation
which has the usability deficiency of not preventing the user
from trying to ignore (or be oblivious of <w>) the limitation.

A similar issue occurs with XPsp2 or IE7 and XP's Repair.
If you're not careful you can get an incompatible mix of module
versions, e.g. some left over from the install of XPsp2 or IE7
and some base level modules installed from the distribution CD.
Supposedly having a slipstreamed version of the CD can avoid
this problem.

And how would that explain the phenomenon happening in clean installs of
WinME (and we are talking WinME)?

If you look around the time IE6SP1 was realeased there are hundreds (not to
say thousands) of posts asking for help with this "unable to install all
components" issue.

I understand and agree with your explanation for IE7, but it doesn't apply
to this very specific bug with WinME and IE6SP1.

Anyway, who's still using WinME?

I happen to have been on the planet in those days <wink> and can tell you
that the vast majority of such problems were caused by not having completely
disabled the anti-virus application prior to installing IE6 SP1. Similarly,
the vast majority of problems WinXP users have had installing IE7 have been
related to the same thing. See

I think you'd be very surprised!

I think you'd be very surprised!

I dumped my own WinME system only 2 years ago and never ever had any real
problems except that IE6SP1 issue that took me 4 or 5 days to find a away
around it.

And it wasn't the AV.

On the other hand I still have a couple Win98's
:)

But I do miss those days (sigh)...

Thanks for the feedback and pointers.
