Using windows XP home with service pak 2 and recently began to have problems
when turning on the computer. About a week ago I got the message can not
initialize error 0x800106ba when booting up but continued to boot normally. I
Recently installed about 20 security updates from Microsoft and now when
booting up, we get to the welcome page, click on user and it will show that
it is loading the settings, then it is saving your settings and logs you off.
I can not get past this screen. We also get a small error box that contains
nothing but a red square and a clickable OK. when you click on OK, it just
continues the cycle of loading your settings then immediately saves your
settings. I can not get to the start up window or to the desktop, we remain
stuck on this screen. I have run a chkdisk and it did a couple of repairs but
it still does not fix the problem. Windows Defender has been uninstalled as
well. I have read the problems others are having about getting on the
microsoft website to download certain fixes but I can not get to that point.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help you can give us.

Can you start in safe mode with networking? Press the f8 function key
before the first Windows screen appears to get a list of startup choices.

Are your antivirus definitions current? Have you done a complete scan of
your system?
