I have a Gateway 500S computer running Windows XP OS. I
also have Compuserve Version 7.0 as my ISP.
I have been trying to enable the Microsoft XP Firewall to
protect my dial-up CompuServe connection as recommended by
Microsoft.
I followed the instructions up until they no longer work.
With Compuserve connected and working in an iconified
window, I go START, then CONTROL PANEL, then NETWORK AND
INTERNET CONNECTIONS, then NETWORK CONNECTIONS as per the
Microsoft instructions. At this point a new window appears
that should allow me to choose which internet connection I
want to modify. Sure enough, Compuserve appears with an
icon underneath the ?Dial Up? title. But the funny thing
is that underneath the word ?CompuServe? it says
?disconnected?. (The next line below that says ?GTW V.92
Voicemodem.?) That does not sound right as my CompuServe
connection is working fine at this point in time. Anyway
I continue as per the Microsoft instructions. I left-click
(highlight) the Compuserve icon. Then they tell me to go
to the left window pane and click on ?Change Settings on
this Connection?. I should be able to open up some choices
that include enabling the firewall in an ?Advanced? tab.
But I can?t. I can click on ?Change Settings on this
Connection? all day and nothing happens. I think it may
have something to do with XP thinking ?Compuserve? is
disconnected.
It was later suggested that I right click instead on the
Compuserve icon. So I right clicked on the ?Compuserve
Disconnected? icon and I do get a new pull-down menu.
?Connect? is at the top of this new
menu and ?Properties? is at the bottom. If I right or left
click on the Properties choice still nothing happens. I
even try to click on the ?Connect? choice in the pull down
menu to try to ?force? the computer to think that there is
a connected to Compuserve but nothing happens. Yet my
Compuserve service is really working as I do all of this.
I can?t find anything in the FAQ or the knowledge base on
this issue. Microsoft?s instructions are based on
everything working correctly, I guess. Why doesn?t
Microsoft XP recognize the fact that Compuserve is really
running just fine? How can I enable my XP Firewall with
Compuserve?
