Can not enable ICS

I have a home wireless network using a linksys router. I
have internet connection sharing on all. I have an XP and
Me macine connected, other XP laptops have connected to
the network at various times - all work fine.

I am attempting to connect a hand-me-down IBM laptop
running Windows 2000 Pro. I get internet connection just
fine - I can't set ICS. When I try to enable I get this:

"An error occurred while Internet Connection Sharing was
being enabled.

Internet Connection Sharing cannot be enabled. The LAN
connection selected as the private network is either not
present, or is disconnected from the network. Please
ensure that the LAN adapter is connected before enabling
Internet Connection Sharing."

ICS wants to set the default IP address to 192.168.0.1
however another device (Intel(R) PRO/100 SP Mobile Combo
Adapter) is set to this as a default.

I have tried to uninstall this other device, but then
the '"Sharing" option disappears (from the LAN properties
window for the wireless adapter).

I am not expert on this but not a complete novice. I have
searched multiple databases and can't find anything
specific other than to remove the device in conflict -
which I can't seem to do without repercussions.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

You have to unset the fixed IP used by the other device: ((Intel(R) PRO/100
SP Mobile Combo
Adapter) )
To do this go into Network Properties and find TCP/IP double click it and
change the IP address to anything not in the range of 192.168.X.X

If the IP is set by DHCP (IE it gets an address from a device such as a
router) then you will need to set it to a manual IP address.

Why are you even trying? You don't want ICS. This laptop doesn't appear to
have two NICs and does not look like it is not going to be the LAN's
Internet NAT Server (which is what ICS is). The Linksys Router is already
doing that job.

Just leave the Laptop's Network Settings set to "Automatic", plug it in,
start it up, and go with it. It will get its Network Settings from the
Linksys Device. You may also want to set the laptop's workgroup name to
match the other machines, and all the machines must have identical user
accounts & passwords on them as well.

Got that. I do that - can get internet connection but can
not see other computers, they can not see mine. have
enabled sharing on folders. workgroups and names are
consistent.

i have an ethernet card which uses 192.168.0.1 by default,
i can't seem to change it, i.e. i try , restart when i
check properties it is set back. if i uninstall it, then
my option for sharing on the linksys adapter disappears.

if you can't think of anything else, thanks for trying.

Ok, sounds good.

The Nic needs to be set to "automatic".
my option for sharing on the linksys adapter disappears.

Forget "sharing". You aren't "sharing" anything.

The two possible problem areas would be:

1. The "Personal Firewall" in XP is enabled,...disable it
2. The Privacy Features of the Wireless Equipment is getting in the way.
You'll have to contact the company's tech support or someone who is familiar
with your specific equipment to help with that. I can not do you any good
there.

If your Nic won't keep the settings you enter, then there may be some
corruption there, but there isn't anything I can think of to address that at
this point.

restart ICS/ICF service and retry

Thanks to everyone for the help. I have it working now -
it is a little funky at times but good enough.
