I have a Win XP SP1 machine at home, and now I can not go to any website. I
connect using dial up modem or cable modem, and it says I am connected, but
when I go to IE and type in any website (www.microsoft.com, www.yahoo.com,
www.google.com), it keeps saying "Page can not be found", and at the top it
says "Could not find server". I used to be able to go to any website before.
I already uninstall McCafee firewall and disable the VirusScan on this
machine.

This problem seems to start happening after we installed Windows XP Hotfix
(SP2) Q815485. I tried to uninstall the Hotfix, but I could not find it in
the list of programs in Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs.
Another information: we used to have XP Home edition, then we upgraded to XP
Professional. After that, we could not even start the Remote Access
Connection Manager, so we reinstall XP SP1, and that enable us to start the
Remote Access Connection Manager again.

How can I fix this problem ? Thank you so much.

Have you tried clearing your temporary internet files and history?
Can you browse using another browser? I always try an alternate browser
if I have a problem like that to verify that the problem is in the
browser and not somewhere else.
You might want to try downloading and installing Mozilla. The
installation WILL NOT affect your IE installation. It will give you a
way to test.

Thanks.
Yes, I went to the menu Tools - Internet Options, and under "Temporary
Internet Files" I clicked on the "Delete cookies" and "Delete Files", but
the problem is still there. I will try another browser (may be Netscape). I
will inform you the result.
Thanks.

Try going to the Control Panel -> Network Connections
and find your network connection...it is most likely
Local Area Connection. Right click on it and select
Properties. Scroll down and select Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP), click on the Properties button. Under the
General tab, make sure both selections for "Obtain an IP
address" and "Obtain DNS server" are set for "automatic".
If there are ip addresses listed and being used, they may
be incorrect and can not find the path to the server.

I posted the same issue at microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support.
You might want to try some of the solutions suggested by Greg and WinGuy.
I will try it tonight.

I'm having the same problem. I use DSL and after while I get the "page
can not be found." I've tried doing a system recovery and everything.
Netscape communicator won't work either when IE goes down. I have
downloaded all the patches and have Norton Internet Security. What's left
to try?
