I have recently installed a cable modem through Road
Runner and that is when the problem started.

When I go to Tools> Internet Options> General, I can not
clear my History with the "Clear History" button.

In the past, with this occassional problem, when I have
gone to Settings> View Files and deleted the files and
cookies from there first, that has helped, but not now.

I have tried going to the Control Panel and using the
Internet options from there and still no luck.

All other browser windows are closed ("X'ed" out).

Any ideas?

Take a look at this page:

I had this problem after installing a cable modem, too. I
had to do it using DOS commands. It did clear things up
for me, then.

Richard,
Possibly your History folder is corrupt:
[XP\2K]
Log on as Administrator and delete the desired <username> folder(s).
[example]
"C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\HISTORY"

Hi everyone,

Your suggestions regarding program conflicts prompted me
to do a "Ctrl+Alt+Delete" and from there close all of the
programs running under the surface other than Explorer and
MSIE 6.

I then proceeded to clear the history in the usual way AND
IT WORKED.

I don't have to do it every time, but when the history
won't clear, that has been the fix.

Thank you all for your input.

Richard

Upon further experimentation, I have found that closing
the software called the Road Runner Medic, provided by
Time Warner cable, solves the problem.
