can multiple power point presentations be combined into one?

Yes and no. If using 97-2000 PPT allows only one master slide and it will
affect the combined slides by giving them the attributes of the master slide
(background, text box placement, font, etc). If using XP-2003 PPT has the
ability to handle multiple masters and can combine the presentations AND
maintain each slides original formatting.

Side Note: If combined in XP-2000 (so there are multiple masters), they can
be viewed in 97-2000 without any problem.

Sure. One way is to open one of them, go to the last slide and then go to
Insert > Slides from File and follow the dialog.
